Hiking to Mantashaberd or Ashot Yerkat Fortress

The hike begins 10 km from Ijevan, where you will reach by car. After approximately an hour of walking through forest trails, you will arrive at Mantashaberd or Ashot Yerkat Fortress, which is surrounded by numerous legends and stories. In historical sources, Mantashaberd is always mentioned alongside Kayen Fortress (Aghjka Berd), suggesting that it was built in the early 10th century. The fortress is surrounded by strong walls, with tower-like structures, and the citadel is located on another rocky cliff rising to the north. Along certain sections of the hiking trail, you may come across and collect semi-precious stones. After exploring this impressive scenery and the mysterious nature of Tavush’s forests, you can return to the workshop, where Vahé will help you process the collected stones, combining them with wood to create unique jewelry.
